Study Shows that Plastics Reduce Environmental Impact

A new study found that use of plastics has four times less of an environmental cost than using alternative materials.   The study examined alternatives such as glass, tin or aluminum and took into account ocean damage, end-of-life management, transportation, production and material and energy recovery costs and impact.   It was found that although the cost of other materials might be lower, on average about four times as much material was needed to perform the same function as plastic.   The American Chemistry Council, which commissioned the study, hopes that the data will bring a broader perspective to the industry’s ongoing sustainability discussion.
