Issue 38 - November 2012
Product Focus: Linear 911P Plasticizer
Linear 911P is a phthalate ester made from a linear alcohol based on ethylene, an abundant olefin that will benefit from the natural gas now found all over the US. The higher molecular weight of 911P gives it superior performance in flexible pvc applications compared to DOP, DOTP, DINP or L9P. In certain applications, it can replace DUP, which is usually a more expensive plasticizer. The linearity of 911P brings an improved low temperature flexibility to flexible pvc and much better uv resistance (weathering) making 911P an ideal plasticizer for pvc roofing, pvc-coated fabric for tents, awnings, marine coated fabrics for boats, etc.
Biopolymers Symposium 2012
Last month two members of our ChemCeed sales team went to San Antonio, TX to attend the Smithers Rapha Biopolymers Symposium 2012. Their goal was to learn more about the biopolymers industry and all the exciting things that are happening there. Many interesting speakers spoke at the event including multiple from our home state of Wisconsin. It was exciting to hear of all the renewable and sustainable technologies that are being developed. There were also speakers who told us about legislation to minimize waste and how those laws are helping to fuel the biopolymer industry. ChemCeed is anxious to see what innovative new technology will be discovered next but until then we are doing our part with our line of Fkur bio-resins.
New Trends in Plasticizers
There is a growing interest in replacing phthalate plasticizers in this current market. Many studies have pointed towards the safe use of phthalate plasticizers, yet public opinion is growing on the potential negative effects. No matter what mandates or formal decisions result from this issue, public opinions have already been formed and some end customers have already, and will continue, to demand alternatives with growing requirements. Beyond the non-phthalate request, many customers are also looking for bio-based/non-petroleum-based alternatives as green initiatives around the country begin to grow. These were all hot topics at SPE’s Vinyltec 2012, and ChemCeed is continuing to diversify our line of plasticizer products in efforts to work with our customers to find the right plasticizer that not only meets the demands of their customers, but also fulfills all necessary performance requirements. Along with our full line of phthalate plasticizers, ChemCeed also carries a diverse line of non-phthalate and “bio-based” plasticizers. ChemCeed will continue to stand at the forefront of trends in plasticizers and offer a full line of plasticizers as the plastics industry continues to evolve.
